FAQS
How long will my extensions last?
Ruka sources 100% human hair, which is prone to the same shedding and tangling that our own hair would experience, especially as curlier hair requires regular detangling. With the right TLC, human hair retains its like-new quality for around 6-9 months with daily installation.
This means that with the right care:
- Wearing your Ruka hair regularly will make it last approximately 1 year.
- Wearing your Ruka hair less often (several times a month or year, even) will have it last at least 2 years.
Getting the most longevity out of human hair extensions means avoiding overly frequent or excessive heat and chemicals like dyeing/bleaching. Generally, treating your Ruka extensions with the same love you would do your own hair is key.
You will receive instructions via email or by scanning the QR code on your package on how to maintain your Ruka hair extensions, and our has a great selection of tutorials, guidance and style inspo to get the best out of your extensions✨
Can the hair be straightened?
Yes it absolutely can - straightened, curled, blown out - you name it. Just like our own hair, your extensions are susceptible to heat damage and loss of curl pattern, so we recommend applying a heat protectant to preserve the hair health if you are going to apply heat tools.
We have designed our textures to give you the full range of hair states with ease. For example, we love that Think Kink can be straightened to give a fluffy Press’d vibe but revert back to its kinks. However, if you know you want to straighten your Think Kink every day it’s probably best to just get Press’d so as to not over process your Think Kink hair (and to save some time in straightening it!). Or of course you can do like us and get both for ultimate range and ease!
Can the hair be dyed?
The short answer is yes. However, keep in mind that colouring human hair extensions requires the same TLC as colouring your own hair, and any dyeing you do is at your own risk.
Whenever you apply a light colour dye, the hair is slightly damaged in the process and can suffer loss of curl pattern/hair loss. This is because the chemical process of lightening hair means you are removing proteins and melanin from the hair, which weakens it.
For best results, we recommend giving it over to a professional who is familiar with colouring curly and coily hair, to ensure that your hair is under the best care.
What hair length should I choose?
The advertised length of our hair is based on the stretched length of the hair - as in the length when you pull on a hair strand. However, similar to real kinky/curly hair, the “shrinkage” of the hair will make it seem about 40% shorter than the straightened out length.
to see our hair length guide to get an idea of the potential shrinkage when the hair is tightened. We also provide the stretched length which can be done with methods used to stretch your own hair (combing out, braid/twist outs or whatever your preferred method is!)
How do I choose a hair texture?
Great question! If you’re purchasing products that need blending (e.g. clip-ins, or bundles for a leave out sew-in), you’ll probably want to go with a texture that closely matches your own hair. If you’re going for a ponytail, though, the blend doesn’t matter so much, as you’ll likely be holding your hair down. Unless of course, you’re looking for a “my hair but tied up” look. Have a look at our Instagram for some inspiration! If you’re still not sure, send us an email at help@rukahair.com or drop us a message on Instagram. We’d be happy to help!
Where are your 100% human hair extensions sourced?
All of our 100% remy human hair extensions - made from virgin hair are sourced in the Northern Chinese provinces and crafted into these custom textures by our partners. We specifically chose hair from these regions because of the resilience of the hair strands to further processing. This means the hair retains its health even after undergoing a chemical free, high-steam process.
If you didn’t already know, the majority of human hair extensions are sourced in India or Hong Kong, even if they are not marketed that way. The geographic names traditionally given to different hair textures e.g Brazilian, Peruvian, Malaysian are usually a representation of the texture the manufacturer has created using human hair from India/Hong Kong.
There is some hair that is sourced elsewhere (e.g. Russia), but this is often inaccessibly expensive because hair donors are much rarer in these locations.
